LETTER FROM MY FATHER

January 27, 2022

As mentioned in a previous blog, my sister Syd sent me a box of letters from both my parents and some from me, mostly written in the mid-1970s. This particular letter from my dad was written in 1987, just three months after my mothers death. My dad died in 2000, 13 years later. He had several good years where he became his own person, before a downward spiral into Alzheimer’s. Before his decline, (and of course when he was ill) we became close, almost like brother and sister. He told me secrets that were shocking to my mind. However, this letter to my sister was touching. His advice was thought out and wise.

He mentioned in the letter the strengths he saw in Syd‘s character, such as leadership and her ability to work with others, helping them to make decisions to enhance their lives. He said she should visualize work in the capacity of leadership and guiding others. He said “opportunities will come your way and you will recognize them.” He said Syd would make a good sales person. He said her skill is “communication.“

He went on to say, “About goals: I have been thinking lately too much emphasis is placed on goals and not enough in the process of obtaining them. Try to enjoy every moment of your life. There is always something to be appreciated.”

Dad mentioned the dream group we used to hold in my parents living room. He said instead of “analyzing dreams,” we discussed our vision for the New Year, 1988.
