BEING HUMAN

As mentioned in a previous blog post, I am participating in an eight week deep dive into the teachings of Ram Dass. As we go further into it, every day I experience another AHA moment.

Ram Dass teaches through exquisite storytelling. He introduces a spiritual concept then tells a story to illustrate the teaching.

The teaching this week involves Ram Dass’ interaction with a spirit entity named Emmanuel channeled by Pat Rodergast. When Ram Dass asks Emmanuel what he should do in the next period of his life, Emmanuel says. “Take the curriculum here in Earth School. Why don’t you just try being human?”

So many of us including me, find something abhorrent in the act of being  human. Don’t humans start wars, hold grievances, approach situations with loveless perception, rape, pilliage and kill?

In our attempt to be holy or spiritual or Angel like, we may confuse non-attachment with disassociation.

How many times when someone is suffering, have you heard someone say, “That is their karma?”

That is a classic example of disassociation.

But when you take the journey from head/intellect to your heart, the fourth energy system of the body, apparently the journey of a lifetime, you can integrate compassion with the act of releasing the attraction or the aversion to any given situation. It is a balancing act worth pursuing.

Ram Dass practiced the art of being human.

What does being human mean to you?
